Historic Flagler County

Isn’t it fun to take a peek into the past? To look at old photographs of where you now live and what it used to be like? I found this fabulous website you can check out, Historic Locations in Flagler County.

There’s so much history that I can share with you, but I’ll just give you a couple of teasers for now! You may want to check out the site for yourself if you’re curious to dig into the history of Flagler County.

Or, maybe I’ll do another article featuring more historic buildings and places in Flagler County. Let’s start with two historic Flagler County buildings.

Historic Flagler County

Old Bunnell State Bank Building (101-107 North Bay Street)

Old Bunnell State Bank Building

This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bank was created in 1910 and moved into the new building in 1917 – that’s over 100 years ago!

This was the only bank in Flagler County from 1917-1932, and then again from 1938-1942.

The interior of this two-story building is paneled with wood. There are now beautiful murals inside the building for visitors to enjoy historic Flagler County.

Flagler County Courthouse (200 East Moody Blvd.)

This Bunnell landmark was first occupied on April 4, 1927, making it over 90 years old!

The Old Flagler County Courthouse. Look at those classic cars!

A few days later, on April 7, 1927, the Flagler Tribune (another oldie!) wrote this about the building: “The building is a handsome one, being built along classic Grecian design of vari-colored brick with ornamental stone for the trim on the outside while the interior is finished with sand colored plaster and a silver-grey wood work except the floors, which have the usual floor finish.”

In 1982 an expansion was planned for needed office space. However, many cracks appeared, starting on the west wall of the old structure when they started to drill for the new annex foundation. For safety, it was decided to relocate all County offices and Courts.

Steel cables were placed around the structure, but there were disagreements about whether or not the building was safe to occupy. So, it remained empty for another 3 years. The County then moved back into the building in February 1985.

Despite the local pride that existed in regards to the original building, in January 2007 the new government service building was completed, along with the court house complex later that September.

The Courthouse today – the home of the First Baptist Christian Academy.

Finally, through a series of events, the First Baptist Christian Academy is now using this historic Flagler County building for its school. The academy outgrew its original building in Palm Coast.

The building still belongs to the county, but how wonderful that the lights are on again! “New life” has been breathed into the building by way of children, Preschool – 12th grade.
