Cutting-Edge Lighting Trends

Find out how design innovations and technology are driving the latest in indoor and outdoor lighting.

By: Sam Henderson

Lighting plays a key role in well-designed spaces. Like all things home, lighting also follows trends that make it possible for consumers to have the latest in technology and stay ahead of current tastes and social changes. Laura Van Zeyl, Vice President of Lighting Technology Development & Marketing for Dallas Market Center, leads the way with Lightovation, the largest lighting show in North America and the only permanent marketplace devoted to lighting in the world. With Laura’s help we have identified some of the latest trends in lighting design and technology.

Combining aesthetics with technology is a big trend in lighting this year. These battery-powered LED lanterns from Kichler provide light right where you need it, indoors or outdoors. They are portable and work freely for 5 hours on each charge. But don’t be fooled by their beauty or portability. These lanterns also come equipped with speakers to play your favorite music via Bluetooth.

Lighting manufacturers have also embraced the trend toward beautiful light fixtures which are designed to work outdoors. This Carson line from Hinkley Lighting is a shining example of outdoor lighting that looks like it belongs in a well-designed, interior space.

From a more technical angle, lighting companies are exploring the potential of LED lighting for interiors. Specifically, they are examining the biological effects of the qualities of light and its ability to affect our overall well-being. By making it possible to not only control the brightness of light but also how warm or cool the light appears, these latest innovations can create a lighting experience perfectly suited for the mood or occasion with just the turn of a dial. For example, with the new Bardot vanity from Edge Lighting, it is possible to simulate the lighting for an event you will be attending and apply your makeup suited specifically for that event.

Lastly, lighting manufacturers are taking aim at millennials, creating products that are high-end design, but still within the reach of this group. Vermont Modern, which is part of the Hubbardton Forge family, has embraced this trend by producing sculptural lighting pieces that are affordable and really speak to this trend through vibrant color, innovative ideas, and unique shapes.
