The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway. Its length spans the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States.

This amazing body of water runs from Boston, Massachusetts, southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida. Then, it follows along the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas.

Because the Intracoastal Waterway system runs along the coast of Florida, paralleling the Atlantic Ocean, it provides boaters with incredible ports of call, without having to endure the open ocean waters.

The Origins of the Intracoastal Waterway

No, it’s not a natural body of water!

Rather, the creation of the Intracoastal Waterway was authorized by the United States Congress in 1919. It is maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Actually, the waterway consists of two non-contiguous segments: the first is the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, extending from Brownsville, Texas to Carrabelle, Florida.

And, the second segment is the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, extending from Key West, Florida to Norfolk, Virginia.

Therefore, these two segments were originally intended to be connected via the Cross Florida Barge Canal across northern Florida. However, this was never completed due to environmental concerns.

Residents and visitors alike agree that cruising along the ICW is beautiful and serene.

And, no worries if you don’t own a boat. Rent a kayak, paddle board, water bike, or electric boat to experience the ICW on your own. Or, sit back and relax on a kayak or boat tour. Some tours even offer fishing.
