Old Florida Style

In Florida, you often hear the style or decor of a house referred to as, “Old Florida style.” But, what does that mean? What design elements create Old Florida style? And, where did that name come from anyway?

Old Florida StyleFurthermore, when you shop for a home in Florida, it’s nice to have knowledge of what an Old Florida style house looks like. Knowing the elements Old Florida incorporates adds meaning to your house-hunting endeavors.

Finally, it’s fun to identify “Old Florida” design elements when you’re out sightseeing!

Florida Cracker Architecture – What?

Old Florida style cracker architecture is a style of wood-frame house used in the 19th century in – you guessed it – Florida.

Compare the two photos, below. As you can see, elements of Old Florida style cracker architecture continues as a design influence in modern Florida homes.

A modern-day version of cracker architecture

Florida cracker homes are characterized by metal roofs; raised floors; large porch areas (some were wrapped around the entire home); and straight, central hallways from the front to the back of the home.

Some houses even had a clerestory to improve the ventilation in the interior. All of these design elements were functional, rather than aesthetic, as they helped keep the house as cool as possible (remember, there was no air conditioning back then!).

The characteristics of the cracker style house have influenced many modern-day variations that are now more aesthetic, rather than functional. Nevertheless, these “new” Old Florida houses are reminiscent of Florida’s rich history when groups of immigrants began to settle in our amazing paradise that I am proud to call home.
